Filippo Ganna has been very active at this start of the season, taking wins in several different stage-races where he has been at. Today at
Tirreno-Adriatico, the time-trial World champion has done it again, confirming great form towards some of his biggest goals of the season.
"Today we did a perfect race. I pushed a lot ahead of coming here, as I love this race and today I showed how much I want to win. This is an important result for me and the team and now we look to tomorrow – we have a sprint and we will see if we can conserve the jersey," Ganna said at the finish, after having his third stage win of the season confirmed.
"When we started there was a lot of headwind and thought ‘today is hard’. Then we turned and the speed improved. It’s a special race and a special result."
Ganna was the man to beat at today's Tirreno-Adriatico opening stage but he did not crack under pressure. Having put 11 seconds on Remco Evenepoel, he is surely going to be safe in the race lead for a few days. He has made it clear though the the overall classification is not a goal, but instead he will be supporting his teammates despite having the leader's jersey.
"I will support my teammates and we will see if my legs are ready to arrive at the end of stages. For sure we need to save a little bit of energy because in less than two weeks we have a special race in Italy (Milan-San Remo) and I want to arrive with good legs," he completed.
