The INEOS Grenadiers rider confirmed his status as the pre-stage favourite to the win. Filippo Ganna won the first stage of Tirreno-Adriatico in dominant fashion, and was crowned first leader of the race in Lido di Camaiore.
Josef Cerny and Alex Dowsett set some strong early times in the 13.9 kilometer route by the Tirreno sea. Israel - Premier Tech's Briton set a time that was not easy to beat, with the likes of Edoardo Affini and Tobias Ludvigsson failing to dislodge Dowsett from the hot seat, with Kasper Asgreen the one to do it late into the day.
Asgreen's time was anticipated and a possible win time, however with Filippo Ganna on course it became apparent the World champion would take the hot seat, removing 24 seconds off the time of Asgreen. Remco Evenepoel came close with only two seconds given to Ganna at the intermediate, but eleven at the end. Tadej Pogacar came home as the last rider to depart, to finish third 18 seconds back.
