Filippo Baroncini scheduled to race in Catalunya seven months after his terrifying crash in Poland

Filippo Baroncini's promising career has been halted by a heavy crash at the Tour de Pologne 2025. The young time trialist subsequently spent some time in an induced coma to allow his body to recover from the worst of injuries. Since waking up, the Italian's progression has been remarkable. In just two months, he returned on his bicycle, and now a racing return is just around the corner.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Ciro Scognamiglio, the 25-year-old is scheduled by UAE Team Emirates - XRG to ride the Volta a Catalunya (March 23-29) next week in support of Joao Almeida. At least, barring a sudden last-minute change to plans.
For Baroncini, the return race couldn't get much harder than this. With one of its most challenging editions in a long time, featuring three successive summit finishes on stages 4, 5 and 6.
Prior to his injury in Poland, Baroncini has been enjoying a strong 2025 campaign that saw him secure the GC at Baloise Belgium Tour (2.Pro), finish runner-up at the Italian time trial Championships, and make a successful Giro d'Italia debut. In his return, the former under-23 world champion will hope to return to his former level before events of last year's August.

- It's weird to say Evenepoel would be making a "serious mistake by adding the 2027 Giro d'Italia to his calendar, warning that such a decision could even be interpreted as a lack of confidence in his ability to win the Tour de France." It may well be a mistake but with so many commentators (of all sorts) continuously claiming almost everything Remco does as being a mistake, almost nobody should care what the pundits and the disparagers should say. His team may not want him to do the Giro, and that matters. But it's possibly or probably up to Remco to decide and it may not have to be decided on until a month or so ahead of the race. Yes , Remco is inconsistent much like the majority of the best riders but he's enjoying a period of not having been recently injured (or sick). Whatever he does he need not be concerned with critics who will second guess any perceived failure no matter what.
