Fernando Gaviria has had a rough comeback to racing at the Tour de Romandie, after recovering from a Covid infection and racing crash back in February, however at
Eschborn-Frankfurt he showed his sprinting quality to take a strong second place, nearing his first World Tour win since the Tour of Pologne 2021.
“It was a hard day out there. The circuits were hard but I’m happy for this result given the high level competition and to finish behind a great rider like Bennett," he said in a post-race interview. The German classic had a decent amount of climbing throughout the day, however it was not too hard for the Colombian to stick with the peloton and fight for the win in the bunch sprint.
Having been on the right wheel - of Sam Bennett - Gaviria just barely missed out on a win that would've been a strong return to the top. However, a second place was still a good result, in which he's taken motivation from.
"I’m heading into the Giro where I want to be : I’ve opened the legs up a bit this week and I’m feeling good again after the clavicle fracture I had. I’m back in form with some good results and I hope for more in the Giro," he concluded. Together with Max Richeze, who will retire after the Italian Grand Tour, Gaviria will be eyeing the sprints at the Giro d'Italia where he will have some support despite the team's GC ambitions with João Almeida.
