Race Director Steve Brunner confirmed the uncertain situation, admitting that planning has stalled while the organizational chaos is resolved.
"Since Terry's departure, it's kind of put everything in neutral," Brunner told
Cyclingnews. "We've got some undetermined things we are figuring out right now, between the state, the city, and key stakeholders."
"Obviously, with the Sport Corp's president departing, it's caused some things to be undetermined. We're trying to figure out the pathway to the future. Whether it's three or one day [of racing], I think that's certainly a strong TBD [to be determined]."
The timing is particularly unfortunate given the broader context of the 2026 North American racing calendar. The return of the Philadelphia Cycling Classic (scheduled for August 30) was intended to create a cohesive block of racing leading into the
GP de Québec and Montréal in September, culminating in the
World Championships in Montreal.
"With the Road Worlds in Montréal, it becomes a really unique opportunity for North American racing... It's definitely a unique year," Brunner noted.

Financial and logistical hurdles
The
Maryland Cycling Classic has faced a difficult existence since its inception. Originally scheduled to debut in 2021, it was postponed due to the pandemic. It ran successfully for two years but
was cancelled in 2024 following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
Beyond the current leadership vacuum, financial viability remains a question. The Baltimore Banner reported that tax documents indicate Sport Corp events have operated at a "significant financial loss." Additionally, local media reported pushback from businesses during last year's edition, citing lost revenue due to road closures.
A spokesperson for the Maryland Stadium Authority, which oversees the Maryland Sports Commission, distanced the state agency from the current crisis. "The Maryland Stadium Authority recognizes the importance of
Maryland Cycling Classic, but is not in a position to comment on future events that were produced and managed by Sport Corp," the spokesperson stated.
Brunner remains hopeful that clarity will emerge soon. "The question is the status of the Sport Corp and also the status of their participation with the event. There has been dialog behind the scenes, so things should come clear in the next few weeks."
