Tadej Pogacar crosses the line celebrating after his stage 4 win at the 2026 Tour de Romandie
It is not everyday that Tadej Pogacar adds a new title to his palmarès. What the World Champion did at Milano-Sanremo earlier this spring has now been mimicked at the Tour de Romandie, where he sealed his first ever overall win this afternoon.
"It was a tough day. Bahrain came to help us, they wanted to go for the stage as well I think and to fight for GC for a better spot. It was good for us, hard pace all day," Pogacar said in a post-race interview.
His mission on the day was difficult to execute but not to plan. Avoiding time losses to Florian Lipowitz would assure him the overall victory virtually, and he succeeded in this. "Then on the climb Florian attacked first - and he did a really good job - but luckily I survived".
An above-ideal weight Tadej Pogacar wasn't as comfortable on the climbs as is usually seen, but through the results sheet one wouldn't be able to tell. After responding to the German this afternoon in Leysin, he beat him in the uphill sprint.
"He launched really early the final and woah... It was a fight to the finish line," the World Champion admits. With wins at Strade Bianche, Milano-Sanremo, Tour of Flanders and Liège-Bastogne-Liége as well, he concludes here a successful spring.

First ever Tour de Romandie victory

This was Pogacar's debut in the Swiss stage-race, and it was hard to aim for a better outcome. "I didn't know what to expect so I'm satisfied". He will return to Switzerland this summer ahead of the Tour de France, with the Tour de Suisse serving as his sole preparation race.
In 12 race days, he now has 8 wins plus 1 overall classification conquest in 2026. His victory tally is now already up to 115, with plenty more expected later in the year. "Every win is important. First it's important to win, to finish off the job of the team".
"It was really amazing, I think all the kids come throughout the week out of school," he asked, to conclude with his thoughts of the environment in Romandie, a race which is looking for a new sponsor in order to assure its future.
"This was super nice to see, in the weekend also the families with the kids, really nice fans and a lot of signs with my name so it was a pleasure to ride this week in Romandie".
