The return of one of cycling’s biggest stars is almost upon
us. Double Olympic champion, former world champion, and Vuelta a Espana winner
Remco Evenepoel is set to make his long-awaited return to racing this month.
The Belgian enjoyed an extraordinary 2024 season. He made
his
Tour de France debut and finished third overall, winning a stage and
securing the white jersey. Then came a historic performance at the Paris
Olympic Games, where he became the first rider to win both the road race and
time trial gold medals at the same Games.
He capped off the year by defending his time trial world
title in Zurich in September. But his momentum came to a sudden halt in
December, when a freak training crash involving a van disrupted his off-season
preparation.
Evenepoel has not raced yet in 2025, but that is set to
change soon. In a recent Instagram post, he simply wrote: "Comeback
month."
The Soudal – Quick-Step leader is expected to return to
competition in the Ardennes Classics. In principle, his comeback will begin at
the Brabantse Pijl on April 18, before continuing with the Amstel Gold Race, La
Flèche Wallonne, and Liège–Bastogne–Liège, a race he won in both 2022 and 2023.
According to RFI, Evenepoel will also be on the start
line at the
Tour de Romandie, which gets underway in Switzerland on April 29.
These races will form a key part of his build-up towards another Tour de France
campaign.
It’s good to have you back, Remco.
