22-year old Carlos Rodríguez has climbed into fourth place at the general classification yesterday at the
Tour de France, as Simon Yates crashed and lost time in the finale. Ahead of a key stage in the race, he claims the heat that's currently being felt could be to his advantage.
"It's never fun to move up because of another rider's fall. Fortunately we were able to stay out of the danger zone ourselves," the Spaniard said at the end of stage 8. Arriving safely in the peloton, he has ridden into fourth spot as Simon Yates was the victim of a crash, one that took out Steff Cras from the race and caused Mikel Landa to also shed some time. This comes as another step for the
INEOS Grenadiers rider who has taken over the team lead in the fight for the podium.
Today's stage up to Puy de Dôme will however be more important, but not a novelty for Rodríguez: "I did a reconnaissance before the Dauphiné. The last four kilometers are tough and the heat in particular can also take its toll. Many riders were already suffering from the heat on Saturday, but for me, the heavier, the better."
With Egan Bernal and Daniel Martínez falling out of GC contention, the Spaniard is in the lead of the team. After a strong performance at last year's Vuelta a Espana he's taking another step in the right direction here at the Tour as he battles among the best, and is perhaps revealing himself to be the team's new main talent. "This year is mainly for learning. I want to see how far I can get, but I don't feel any pressure. I can't do more than my best," he concluded.
