Arnaud Démare has finished a total of four occasions in second place over the last five weeks of racing in one-day races, but has yesterday broken the streak at the GP d'Isbergues where he stormed to a dominant win.
“I’m really happy to win. I was a bit bothered to add up second places lately, and it feels really good to put my hands in the air," Démare said after the finish. The Frenchman had finished second in the European championships, but onwards he took the same position at the Egmont Cycling Race, Druivenkoers - Overijse and the Primus Classic. This was not enough for the Grouapama - FDJ rider who is used to taking a large amount of wins, and has added his sixth of 2022 at the GP d'Isbergues.
"I think it’s well-deserved because the guys did a good job all day to keep the breakaway under control. We did all the work to get it back and then the train set up just as I wanted. The guys were up there when it was needed. It was really good," he said. The French team did a standard leadout, perfectly placing the 31-year old in position for the win.
Démare, being one of the strongest in the field, completed the job. "I then had the strength to do a strong sprint. When I started it, I felt that it was going to be difficult to overtake me, and it was confirmed," he confirmed. Next week he'll be back to competition at the Paris-Chauny classic.
