You'll often find that in any sport, the most dominant winners aren't always the most adored as fans prefer to see the underdog triumph over the all-conquering force. In
Tadej Pogacar's case however, not only is he won of the most victorious riders in the current peloton, but also one of the most celebrated.
According to the iconic figure in French cycling,
Bernard Hinault, there is a clear and obvious reason for the almost universal love of the Slovenian leader of
UAE Team Emirates. "Pogacar is more playful than Jonas Vingegaard. And then there's that smile..." 'the Badger' analyses warmly in conversation with
Eurosport. "Sport is not a job. It's a game, a pleasure, a joy."
In some seriously lofty praise, Hinault announces he sees a lot of himself in Pogacar and a lot of the legendary Eddy Merckx also. "He wins in the spring, he wins in the summer, he wins at the end of the season," lists the 69-year-old, five time Maillot Jaune winner. "He's the one who is closest to us, honestly. He attacks, he has fun, he's happy."
This isn't the first time that Hinault has spoken warmly of Pogacar either. The Frenchman previously lauded praise on the Slovenian following his dominant Giro d'Italia win earlier this year. "We come from different generations, but I like his character and his temperament," Hinault told La Gazzetta dello Sport back in May. "Pogacar wants to win in every race. He doesn't always manage it, but that's not the point. I like his attitude."
After his dominance at the Giro d'Italia and the injury interrupted preparations of his main Maillot Jaune rivals, Pogacar starts as the overwhelming pre-race favourite for the 2024
Tour de France. Supported by the likes of Joao Almeida, Adam Yates and Juan Ayuso among others, the strength of the UAE Team Emirates lineup also looks to be far superior of the rest of the peloton.
I hate this narrative that Jonas doesn't enjoy riding his bike. In the book by Nando Boers about Jumbo-Visma, Jonas said that even if he had failed at Granon, he still thinks it would have been a good day because of the way they rode as a team. He really enjoyed that they could race like they were just boys again.
What people tend to forget is that Tadej has not been in the yellow jersey since the Granon stage. He has been in the role where he has had to attack and throw all he could at Jonas and Visma. He's also a better sprinter than Jonas and that gives him a lot more options to attack. I don't think Jonas rides boringly, I just think he has been in the position where he's been in the yellow jersey and he had to be in a more defensive mindset.
I don't think Jonas is unlikeable at all. He's just a bit stilted and introverted.
If the peloton were a classroom:
Pogi is the class clown who also happens to be brilliant.
Vingo is the shy but brilliant kid that sits off to himself, doesn't say much but excels on all exams.
Aww that smile 😍😍😻
Everything these days boils down to a popularity contest.
Very hard for people who tell the truth or are honest or speak their mind or ask original or awkward questions to compete, even if they are totally professional. And, thanks to the internet being predominantly Anglo in much of the world, as a non Anglo, you start with a certain disadvantage, not due to the spectators who abide by Anglo as the language of exchange but by the predominance of Anglo media thus biasing reporting. Thankfully this Anglo website doesn’t seem to be Anglo so despite the hilarious mistakes (this time here the lapsus won instead of one) at least there doesn’t seem to be an Anglo rider bias.
People “like” Pog better because his personality makes it harder to imagine doping than with Vin, but as someone already pointed out either they’re both at it or neither.
While i like an all-fight between Pog and Jonas, an individual dominant victory is also fine over a mountain sprint by the never attack just wheel suck for 21 days riders
I find Vin very much in the mold of old team Sky robotic. His team sits on front for 3 or 4 hours then blast off for 5 km. The PR team must pull their hair out at his lack of charisma and ability to reach the public and fans. Check out the Netflix series 2 documentary.I love the look of total shock and awe oh is sports directors faces when he beats Pog in the TT. They just knew what everyone was thinking. I hope he puts a good fight up but like marmite love or hate 😂😂😂😂 sorry English thing
Jonas strikes me as a genuinely good character. But he has the charisma of a wet fart.
Between that and the racing style you aptly described, I just can't find a reason to cheer for him over the other contenders.
How about just the old-fashioned may the best man win???
All these guys have worked their asses off to get where they are, it’s not a Miss Universe contest
Even miss universe has to have charisma😀😀
Yes that’s what that competition is about, a cycling champion doesn’t. Plenty of athletes have been admired for their performance with near zero charisma, why does it have to be different in cycling?
I’ll start with Bubka and McEnroe and let others add if they want. Don’t know enough about Wiggins but I’m guessing he might qualify?
All of Jonas wins are solo rides. He has done 31 km solo raid this year and a 20 km raid.
Jonas is the best climber. That is how he wins. I think it's hilarious that people think "it's boring" when it's objectively much more impressive to be able to do that and take multiple minutes on your opponents than a sprint for bonus seconds.
There's nothing novel about Jonas. Just another variation of the robotic stage racing approach that has smothered the sport of cycling since 1991.
At least with Pog you get a return to the kind of versatile performances that existed during the Merckx and Hinault eras.
I'll take that any day over what we've had to suffer through the last 30 years.
Jonas has won stages this year by going 30 km solo, 20 km solo and 5 km+ solos. He has counterattacked, attacked and won stages no one thought he had a chance to win. He has sprinted for bonus seconds.
How is that boring? The only difference is that Jonas is smart. Sure, it's fun to see Tadej throw bomb after bomb at Jonas in the Tour de France, but it has never actually secured him the victory over Jonas. Tadej also hasn't been in the yellow jersey since stage 11 in the 2022 TdF. There is a big difference when you ride to defend a yellow jersey and when you have to attack.
