Alessandro Covi withdraws from Giro d'Italia after injuries suffered in crash which ended Tao Geoghegan Hart's hopes

The first rider to go down in yesterday's stage-defining crash, Alessandro Covi was able to remount and finish the stage. Sadly though those injuries sustained have taken their toll on the Italian.

The former Giro d'Italia stage winner lost his front wheel on a slippery descent yesterday on stage 11 and subsequently brought a group of riders behind him down also. Those riders included the Maglia Rosa, Geraint Thomas, Primoz Roglic and Tao Geoghegan Hart who sadly was taken from the race in an ambulance.

Whilst as mentioned, Covi was able to finish the stage an official announcement made by the UAE Team Emirates Twitter account this morning has revealed that;

"Unfortunately due to injuries sustained in his crash yesterday, Alessandro Covi will not start today's stage of the Giro d'Italia."
