After two wet first stages, the Vuelta a España leaves Barcelona and heads to the Principality of Andorra for the first mountain stage. Alberto Contador, Eurosport analyst, explains the characteristics of the day.
"We leave Barcelona on the third stage, not too long, 158 km, but the first big test for the riders in the general classification. The first test will be Ordino, a pass known to many riders who live in Andorra and which has a bonification," the former race winner said. "Then, fast descent and finish in Arinsal. It is a pass of just over 8 km and 8% average gradient. The key moment will take place between 3 and 1, we are talking about 2 km of 10% with ramps up to 14".
The Giro, Tour and Vuelta winner believes that the first differences in the classification could start to appear and that men like Geraint Thomas or Primoz Roglic, who crashed in the second stage, could pay for it: "We'll see who has the legs and who doesn't have the legs to win this Vuelta a España. Attention to the riders who crashed in the second stage, who finished without problems, but that could take its toll on them."
By any means the final 8-kilometer ascent has the ramps to make gaps, however it is unsure whether many teams will have intentions of taking risks already, or instead race defensively and gauge their form, on a day that is expected to be very windy and still somewhat wet and treacherous.
