Wout van Aert was unable to truly test Mathieu van der Poel in Lievin at the 2025 Cyclocross World Championships, finishing a somewhat distant 2nd behind his arch nemesis. In this newly revealed video though, the reason why Van Aert was so far back early on comes to light.
Having started in the 4th row, the Belgian already at a disadvantage. Whilst Van der Poel took to the front after the first couple of corners, staying out of trouble, Van Aert was caught in traffic. That might have proved fatal too as Van Aert was pushed into the post as he looked to move up on an early corner, being forced to unclip and losing numerous positions as a result. “I was completely boxed in and almost hung in the fences in the first corner. It took a long time before there was space and I could start moving up. Of course I had hoped for a different scenario, but I also knew that this possibility existed. I tried to stay calm and start my race,” said about it post-race.
