What a performance, and what a win for Thibau Nys, who has won the Belgian cyclocross championships after a brilliant recovery ride. Behind the European champion, Laurens Sweeck came second, and a battling Toon Aerts picked up the final place on the podium.

At the start, it was Vandeputte who led the way and was joined by a group that included Aerts, Sweeck, Iserbyt. Unfortunately, European champion Thibau Nys had a bad start and left himself with an awful lot of work to do very early on.

But Nys refused to give up, and during the second lap he managed to move into the silver medal spot behind the leader Michael Vanthourenhout. And Nys began to show his class on lap three, as he decided to up the tempo and some gaps began to appear, and Vanthourenhout suddenly looked like he was struggling.

However, with just a lap to go, Nys showed just why he is the European champion. He managed to build a lead of 10 seconds over Laurens Sweeck in second, with Vandeputte 14 seconds off the leader, and Vanthourenhout suffered a fall which put him out of contention. And try as they might, none of the contenders could get close to the son of the cyclocross legend, who showed today why some consider him to be the man to take over from Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert.

The big story on the final lap was Toon Aerts, who battled through the field and passed Vandeputte for the bronze medal, as Laurens Sweeck took the silver 9 seconds behind the deserved new champion Nys.
