Mathieu van der Poel brought joy to the Dutch at the 2025 Cyclocross World Championships in Lievin last Sunday, equalling the legendary Eric De Vlaeminck's long-standing record by winning his 7th Rainbow Jersey. A little further behind on the course though, Van der Poel's compatriot Pim Ronhaar was having a much more difficult time of things.
Eventually crossing the line over five and a half minutes down on Van der Poel, it was far from the kind of performance the two-time World Cup race winning Ronhaar would've hoped for beforehand. Taking to his official Instagram account in the days following however, Ronhaar has gone someway to explain the lesser performance, revealing an early crash, showing how he was left needing crutches after the race and explaining how he's now set for an ultrasound scan on his knee.
“There is no failure except in no longer trying,“ begins the 23-year-old's post on Instagram, updating fans on his condition. "Crashed a few times last Sunday, at one crash i hit my knee very hard. Luckily no fractures, today we do an ultrasound scan. Hopefully nothing comes of the scan. I want to thank the team and @praktijk_ml for all the help. My family and of course my girlfriend for all the mental support."
