The 2023 Tour de France saw a major shift in the general classification on stage 5 as Australian, Jai Hindley moved into Yellow after a successful breakaway. Simon Yates lost some places in the GC but remains confident and was full of praise for Hindley.
"Obviously, I wasn't really expecting Jai to go up the road but you never know in those sorts of crazy starts so chapeau to him," the Team Jayco AlUla leader told ITV Sport's Daniel Friebe after the conclusion of a hectic stage 5. "You're always a little bit nervous when someone like Jai goes up the road. But it wasn't our responsibility to pace today."
Behind Hindley, Jonas Vingegaard made his first big attack of this year's race, putting time into almost all his rivals including Tadej Pogacar and the Yates brothers. "Jonas has shown us a clean pair of heels," says Simon Yates with a wry smile. "It wasn't the hardest stage I've ever done but you don't know how he (Pogacar e.d) has recovered from his injury."
Yates crossed the line alongside Pogacar and now sits 7th in the general classification, level on time with the Slovenian, 1:40 down on Hindley. "To be at the level required to be the best, it takes a lot of work and a lot of time. Maybe he's not had the best preparation," Yates concludes.
