Last year's winner of the Green Jersey at the Tour de France, Wout van Aert has recently revealed that targeting the points classification is not high on his list of ambitions this time around. So who does he predict will ride to Paris in green?
“I am in a different position than last year going into the Tour. Then we had a clear plan to grab as many points as possible," the Belgian explained at a pre-Tour de France press conference on Thursday in Bilbao. “Now we are going for stage results, the green is not really a goal. The ride schedule is also completely different. There are still many points to earn in the last four days of this Tour. You never know if there's still a chance, but my favorites are Jasper Philipsen and Mads Pedersen."
Philipsen has the advantage of Mathieu van der Poel as a leadout man whilst Pedersen won the points classification at last year's Vuelta a Espana. "Those two go well over the slopes and there are many rides that can end in a sprint after a long hard day. That suits them,” van Aert clarifies.
“I like this Grand Départ. It is an interesting course, but it is difficult to predict which riders this will suit," van Aert continues, referencing his plan to take an early Maillot Jaune. "For the pure climbers the climbs are probably a bit too short, for riders like me they are long and especially steep enough. It's going to be tricky, but I'm here to try."
