Pablo Castrillo has emerged as one of the surprise names near the top of the general classification at the 2025 Tour de Suisse, after infiltrating the decisive breakaway on the opening stage. The Movistar Team rider has gained significant time over the likes of João Almeida and other key contenders, but insists he's not getting carried away.
"The truth is good, we took the opportunity in that breakaway and I have quite an advantage over people like Almeida and important people in the general classification," Castrillo said. "Day by day I'll see how the general classification goes and also if there's a chance for a stage I'll take it. In any case, no pressure."
When asked before Stage 3 whether he could actually challenge for overall victory by holding off or gaining time on Almeida, Castrillo was quick to temper expectations.
"Winning is very complicated, maybe a top 10 or a top 5 is possible, but I tell you that I'm going day by day trying to take advantage of the opportunities and see where the race is positioned."
His goal, for now, is to hold position and make the most of the buffer gained on Stage 1. “It's true that as we have enough time on Almeida and other people that gives you peace of mind, in the following stages that are quite hard everyone will take his position. A top 10 can be seen, I'm going day by day, winning is very complicated, you can opt for a top 10 or a top 5."
