“We lost 50 seconds in five kilometres... it's cheating” - Motorbike controversy explodes in Romandie as Louis Vervaeke joins growing criticism

The debate around race convoy influence at the Tour de Romandie has taken a sharper turn, with Louis Vervaeke delivering one of the most direct criticisms yet after another breakaway was reeled in on the queen stage.
Just hours after team-mate Valentin Paret-Peintre questioned the role of motorbikes in shaping the race, the Soudal - Quick-Step rider went further, pointing to a specific moment where he believes the dynamic shifted decisively.
“We lost 50 seconds in five kilometres,” Vervaeke said in conversation with DirectVelo.
“I imagine that’s when the TV broadcast started. It’s like usual," added the Belgian. "As soon as the live coverage begins, the motorbikes are there, and for me sometimes it changes the race. It’s a shame.”

Breakaway plan undone

The Belgian had been central to a clear team strategy designed to avoid a familiar outcome in a race dominated so far by Tadej Pogacar. “The goal was for me to get a gap before the first Jaunpass climb, and then for Valentin Paret-Peintre to bridge across,” Vervaeke explained.
The plan initially worked. The breakaway established a lead of up to three minutes, with strong cooperation among the riders at the front and the race finely balanced heading into the middle phase of the stage.
But that advantage proved fragile. As the peloton increased the pressure behind, the gap began to fall rapidly, and for Vervaeke, the timing of that collapse raised immediate questions.

“It makes a huge difference”

What frustrated the 32-year-old most was not simply being caught, but the conditions in which the chase developed. “I was going full gas on the flat,” he said. “I know from the time when I was riding for Remco Evenepoel that motorbikes can change the race.”
He then pointed to the specific aerodynamic effect created by convoy positioning. “When you’re in the break, they ride behind you, while another motorbike is in front of the peloton. When you have a headwind, it makes a huge difference.”
That perception mirrors concerns raised across the peloton in recent seasons, where riders have increasingly pointed to motorbike placement as a factor in how quickly breakaways are brought back, particularly on exposed or flat terrain.

Stronger language as frustration grows

Where Paret-Peintre hinted at the issue, Vervaeke chose to address it more directly, reflecting a growing sense of frustration after repeated breakaway attempts have failed to stay clear this week. “We do anti-doping controls to catch cheaters, but benefiting from the help of motorbikes is also a bit like cheating,” he said.
The comments add fuel to an ongoing debate, one that has already drawn attention from team staff earlier in the race and now appears to be gaining traction among riders themselves.

Still committed to the role

Despite the disappointment, Vervaeke remained measured when reflecting on his own role within the team.
Over the course of his career, he has increasingly settled into a supporting position, and that perspective continues to shape his outlook even on days where the result falls short. “I realised over time that I was missing something to achieve big results myself, so I still take a lot of pleasure in helping riders who have a bit more talent than me,” he said.
On a stage that once again ended with Pogacar asserting control on the decisive climb, the breakaway’s fate ultimately followed the expected script. But the reaction afterwards suggests the story of this stage will extend beyond the result itself, with the question of convoy influence now firmly back in focus.
