Vuelta a San Juan: Fernando Gaviria wins stage 4 at reduced bunch sprint

Fernando Gaviria aims high in 2023, and his first stage win has already been taken as he won the fourth stage of the Vuelta a San Juan in a bunch sprint that saw some of the main riders missing.
The day had quite some climbing early on. The race organization struggled to update on the riders who were out in front but it is believed a large group managed to escape, but was caught early on in the day. The strong winds made it a nervous days, with some splits occuring that saw some riders miss out on the battle for the win.

However in the last hour of racing things settled down and a bunch sprint was inevitable. A reduced peloton however where some of the sprinters were missing. Filippo Ganna tried to surprise in the final kilometer but it was a tough ask with the sprinters just behind.
Fernando Gaviria launched his sprint from behind and managed to benefit on the slipstream of Ganna in the final straight where a crash took place. Gaviria beat Peter Sagan in the sprint, with Ganna finishing third.

Given how he dropped everyone he'd have had no problem with dropping both on the asphalt Nokereberg, the final climb. With Grègoire to assist him before then, he may have able to hold out for 200 m more to take the win. None of this matters for Groupama-FDJ because Grègoire would've been caught anyway

- 100% agree. Even at his strongest, Armstrong wouldn't dare attempt what Pogacar pulls off with regularity. I remember one time where Ullrich attacked on the Tourmalet when the race was to finish in Luz Ardiden. Both the solo attack, and Armstrong responding to neutralize it on his own, were simply unheard of at the time. Now we almost take such exploits from Pog and Vingegaard for granted.

- Look, winning 7 Tours can be a massive achievement, but it can't compare with Pogi or Merckx. Last year Pogi won the Tour, the WC, and was on the podium in Monuments 5X (3X1st, 1X2nd and 1X3rd)...never before done in history. Now compare this with Armstrong!?!?!?Mou-Cro-HR02-04-2026
