A bitter pill for Jumbo-Visma: Primoz Roglic will not start the 17th stage of the Vuelta a Espana today. He was placed second in the overall classification after yesterday, but has crashed violently in sight of the line yesterday, sustaining injuries too heavy to continue.
Roglic attacked yesterday's explosive finale into Tomares and took time on his rivals on the overall classification. He was given the same time as the front group, taking eight seconds on the peloton, however in sight of the line he crashed mid-sprint. It was unclear exactly how the incident happened but it has seen a bloodied Roglic cross the line shortly afterwards.
He suffered from road rash in several parts of his right side and lost a lot of blood as a result. Jumbo-Visma accessed the injuries last night, but this morning the decision was taken for the Slovenian not to take to the start of stage 17. This is a very tough hit following his abandon from the Tour de France due to an early crash, and his 2020 Tour where he lost what seemed to be a certain win on the final day of competitive racing.
After the abandon of Sepp Kuss and Edoardo Affini from the race, Jumbo-Visma has now been left empty handed after almost three weeks of work, with stage wins to become the new priority.
