After being the only man to match
Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard on the Pike climb of the first stage,
Cofidis's
Victor Lafay once again showed good legs, to take a brilliant victory on stage 2 of the 2023
Tour de France.
With an elite group of around 25 riders coming into the finale together, Lafay launched a solo move with just under a kilometre to go. As the rest of the group hesitated, waiting for
Jumbo-Visma and
Wout van Aert to reel him in, Lafay continued to press on.
Once the bunch finally launched their own sprints, it was too late. A visibly frustrated van Aert coming an agonising second, with Tadej Pogacar third, gaining another couple of bonus seconds.
