It was in plain sight during the TV broadcast and was undeniable. Remco Evenepoel brake-checked a rival at the Tour of Britain's queen stage during the final climb to The Tumble, and although he didn't face major consequences for it, he has been fined due to the unusual incident he caused.
In stage 5 of the Tour of Britain, the climbers were set to go to a head-on battle on the Welsh mountain which was climbed on two occasions. In the final of which there were several attacks, and the final kilometers saw a very dangerous move from Pavel Sivakov, Oscar Onley and Afonso Eulálio. Behind, it was Remco Evenepoel who counter-attacked to try and bridge across, but with a strong headwind present, there was reluctancy in pulling the group all the way across the gap.
Eventually Ilan van Wilder came to the Olympic Champion's support, connecting the two groups and leading the race into a sprint, in which Evenepoel won. However over social media there was a lot of backlash over a move that Evenepoel did with 1.5 kilometers to the finish, as he purposefully braked whilst Tudor Pro Cycling Team's Mathys Rondel was on his wheel. The Frenchman did not crash due to his incident but was also forced to brake and certainly had a big scare at a critical moment of the race.
But Evenepoel did not get away with it, as after the race, according to Sporza, he has been fined as a result of his actions. Regardless it will be something that won't really be of interesting to the Belgian, but nevertheless he was fined 100 Swiss Francs and 10 UCI points. Evenepoel will start stage 6, the final one of the race, only 2 seconds away from Romain Grégoire - and tied in time with Julian Alaphilippe. A time penalization could've proved deadly for his overall classification ambitions.
