Stage 14 of the Gior d'Italia will be remembered by many for the collective crash that caused big differences in the general classification, as well as the already
confirmed abandon of Giulio Ciccone.
But even before that, there was another incident that didn't go unnoticed by the television cameras and even earned a yellow card.
Damiano Caruso, from
Bahrain - Victorious, was seen taking off his jacket halfway through the stage and when he tried to throw it into the ditch, he accidentally hit
Dylan van Baarle, from Team Visma | Lease a Bike, in the face. The video was quickly captured on camera and shared on Instagram by
TNT Sports Cycling.
Van Baarle kept his composure and continued his race, although it was clear that he was clearly annoyed by what had happened. The Italian rider promptly acknowledged his mistake and apologized, which Van Baarle accepted.
Jury wasn't going to let that incident go unpunished and promptly issued Caruso a deserved yellow card on top of a UCI points deduction and a hefty 500 CHF fine.
