The Covid-19 health protocol was already not being followed in some races this year, whilst some chose to not enforce a rider's removal from the race if he were to test positive.
“Thanks to extensive vaccination campaigns, the forms of the disease remain relatively mild, even in susceptible people. That is part of the general prevention against infectious diseases of the respiratory tract," the UCI said in a recent statement.
Enforced in 2020, it was a must when it came to organizing events following the first wave of the pandemic. Throughout 2020 and 2021 few races had much crowd on the roads, whilst race organizers and teams followed extensive regulations to keep everyone as safe from the disease as much as possible.
All throughout these years however, even when Covid cases were not frequent in the peloton, a constant use of protective gear continued from some teams as occasional outbreaks do still occur.
