Tim Merlier has taken the victory of the sixth stage of the UAE Tour, with a superb long sprint that caught the rest of the sprinters out. That makes it two great days in a row for Merlier, after his win on stage 5.
After Tadej Pogacar's exploits in the breakaway yesterday, and he nearly managed to behave himself during the stage...but not quite. With around 70km to go the world champion attempted to cause some damage in the peloton with a little acceleration, but the bunch stayed together.
With 40km to go, a breakaway was hovering around 60 seconds ahead of the peloton, but 20km later that gap had come down to 40 seconds.
Head wind was once again a factor, and even with still 10km of racing to go the sprint teams were trying to work there way towards the front of the bunch. Milan was looking ominous, so was Merlier, and Philipsen was lurking in the pack as well.
As the mist came down in the desert, it was set to be another dramatic bunch sprint as the peloton finally reeled in the remains of the breakaway in the final metres.
In the end, there was no stopping the European champion who caught Jasper Philipsen and the other top sprinters napping by launching his sprint early.
Tomorrow, the UAE Tour will come to an end with a 176km stage from Al Ain Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium to Jebel Hafeet. Will Tadej Pogacar secured another stage win there, and his first overall victory in his first race of 2025?
