Tour of Slovenia: Dylan Groenewegen wins stage 1 in tight sprint

Dylan Groenewegen has gotten a victory ahead of the Tour de France. The Team Jayco AlUla rider has sprinted to victory on stage 1 of the Tour of Slovenia.

Teo Pecnik, Bostjan Murn, Andrea Garosio and Tomas Kalojiros settled in the breakaway of the day, looking for success in what is an explosive day. The breakaway wasn't successful however, with the strong pace in the peloton seeing the last survivor Murn being caught with 35 kilometers to go.

More attacks followed however in the many short ascents that followed. Alessandro Fedeli and Lucas Eriksson attacked with 16 kilometers to go and were shortly after joined by Alessandro Tonelli. The trio enjoyed a small gap whilst the peloton struggled to bring through the firepower to reel back in the attack.

This seemed to be a day missed for the peloton, however the final kilometers saw a change in the time difference, the peloton managed to reel in the trio already inside the final 500 meters, almost in sight of the line. Team Jayco - AlUla performed an ideal leadout for Dylan Groenewegen, the Dutchman took the win on the day although he had to work very hard for it, as Phil Bauhaus came only inches away from it. Matteo Moschetti took third place on the day.
