Jumbo-Visma have had a difficult start to the week at the Giro d'Italia, however in the Tour de Hongrie Olav Kooij has brought the Dutch team back into the spotlight for the best reasons as he took the win and first lead of the race in the Hungarian race.
The first day of the 2.1 race saw a 195-kilometer day on the menu, without any climb that could pose a challenge to the fast men. The four-rider breakaway threatened the win, only caught within the final kilometer which forced many teams to burn their leadout early on. Pre-stage favourite Fabio Jakobsen was nowhere to be seen near the front, allowing other sprinters to be in contention for the win.
Trek - Segafredo managed to put Matteo Moschetti in prime position for the sprint but the Italian was no match to Olav Kooij who launched his sprint on the opposite side of the road, and managed to hold off Elia Viviani who finished second in the stage. Matthew Walls completed the podium.
