Although he may have done enough to secure the overall lead of the race at the 2023
Baloise Belgium Tour,
Mathieu van der Poel has admitted he wasn't overly impressed by his time-trial efforts.
“A good starting position for tomorrow, that was the most important thing," the 28-year-old Dutchman revealed in his post-stage interview. “I am also satisfied with the feeling. The shape is good and I am satisfied with my wattages. I am getting better day by day."
"In the second part I was also able to accelerate with a headwind,” continues van der Poel before reflecting on what could have been improved. “I had hoped to be closer to the winner. But yes, in the second part of the ride aero also played more of a role. Time trial is not really my specialty.”
The stage was won by Uno-X Pro Cycling Team rider Søren Waerenskjold, who now sits just a second behind van der Poel in the general classification. As a double disappointment for the Dutchman, he was also fined by the race jury for not wearing a number on his back.
