After blowing up the 2025 Giro d'Italia on stage 16, Richard Carapaz is already focused on what lies ahead. Ending the day just 31 seconds behind Isaac del Toro in the general classification, Carapaz has his sights remaining firmly set on claiming the Maglia Rosa in Rome.
Looking forward to the daunting Mortirolo climb on stage 17, Carapaz is cautious but optimistic. While it may be a day for the breakaway, he knows the mountain stages ahead could be decisive in shaping the overall standings. “Today will be tough, no doubt. We have to stay alert, as we have throughout this race," he previews in a pre-stage interview at the startline. "It could be a key moment — or it might not. But I’m prepared for whatever comes.”
When asked about the competition, Carapaz acknowledged the threat posed by Simon Yates and Isaac del Toro, who currently hold the lead. But his goal is clear: to close the gap and surpass them during the crucial mountain stages that remain. “Simon has been consistently strong, and Del Toro showed great resilience even after a tough day yesterday. They’re still ahead of me, but I’m confident I can make up time in the next three mountain stages. That’s where this race will be won or lost.”
