The UAE Tour has come to an end and the winner doesn't come as a surprise. Tadej Pogacar was the man to beat throughout the whole week, and he performed as expected. Today he won stage 7 with a comfortable solo victory at Jebel Hafeet, the race's queen stage.
The stage started off the way several others ended, with a mass crash. Chris Froome, Arvid de Kleijn and Niklas Behrens were among those involved and forced to abandon the race, whilst Carlos Rodríguez already failed to start the stage due to a collarbone fracture from a previous crash.
The breakaway of the day consisted of 12 riders including the likes of Jonathan Milan and Alexey Lutsenko who tried to surprise his GC rivals. But as it would turn out, the group would be caught very early on as Soudal - Quick-Step and Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe triggered echelons on a day where the wind blew hard.
A few of the day's main favourites such as Lennert van Eetvelt and Felix Gall were not part of the front group, but Pogacar was, as well as a few more GC contenders. Milan went on to win the intermediate sprints and seal the poitns classification, and when the climb to Jebel Hafeet started Florian Vermeersch and Rune Herregodts put themselves in front, splitting the group to only about a dozen riders, and Tadej Pogacar then launched his attack with over 7 kilometers to go.
The World Champion was at first followed by Oscar Onley and Giulio Ciccone, but quickly dropped the two and went on to win at Jebel Hafeet once again, confirming at the same time the expected overall win.
Behind Onley would crack, and Pello Bilbao jumped from behind to catch up with Giulio Ciccone. The Italian would win the sprint for second place; whilst the likes of Iván Romeo, Oscar Onley and Finn Fisher-Black finished amongst the first.
