Alberto Contador reviewed what happened with Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard in the final time-trial of the Tour de France into the mountains, and also what is to expect from stage 14 as the peloton tackles an incredible hard day on the bike with many long and steep climbs.
"It's been over for a while now, fourth victory in another day that has been superior from the beginning although it could have been more favorable for a Remco who has not had his day. He was already setting the best time and point by point he made the difference. Vingegaard has been in his place, because he has been setting very good times, but Tadej is at another level," Pogacar said in words to Eurosport.
On stage 14 of the race, which starts in Pau and finishes in Superbagnères, including the climbs of Tourmalet, Aspin and Peyresourde, the Spaniard commented the following:
"There's a real big stage coming up in the Tour de France with almost 5,000 meters of elevation gain and the dreaded Tourmalet. At the start there will surely be a lot of struggle to get the breakaway, either by people who want to recover time for the overall or for someone who wants to hunt the stage".
"Then the chain of Tourmalet, Aspin, Peyresourde and Superbagnères, a climb in which great Spaniards have won as Bahamontes or Tarangu and we will see if the breakaway is successful or the general [classification riders]. I think we'll have two races, one for the stage victory and the other to see how the podium moves".
It will be an important day, but at this point in time it already feels quite difficult for anyone to close the gap on Tadej Pogacar. Unless something unusual happens, that is unlikely to happen, but the fight for the podium grows ever-tense with multiple riders in the space of a few minutes.
