The European Championships men's time-trial will be taking place on the 1st of October and feature a truly stellar field looking to take an important victory late in the season. We take a look at the startlist of the race, which is expected to have its start at 15:45CET and finish at 17:00CET.
The event is scheduled in Drôme-Ardèche, with the men’s individual time trial slated to unfold over roughly 24 km between Loriol-sur-Drôme and Étoile-sur-Rhône. It is a mostly flat one, matching the women's course, favouring the specialists with around 90% flat roads but with a small hilltop finish where the key differences can still be made - last year the winning margin was of a mere 9 seconds.
The European Championships have hosted the men’s elite time trial since the late 1990s. In 2024, Edoardo Affini of Italy claimed the European time-trial crown in Hasselt, edging out strong rivals such as Stefan Küng and Mattia Cattaneo, whilst a lot of the world's best time-trialists were absent. This year that is very much not the case, as the World Championships course was not attractive for many of the pure time-trialists. That win added a prestigious continental title to his palmarès and reinforced the competitive depth in modern men’s time trialing.
Remco Evenepoel, as the reigning Olympic and World Champion, will look to add to his current palmarès the third most important title in pro cycling in the discipline, one he has conquered in the past which are the European stripes. He is Belgium's best hope but realistically Alec Segaert also provides a very strong card to play for another top result. Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic are all absent from the race, and in a mostly flat course it will be the specialists who will make life hard for Evenepoel.
The defending champion Edoardo Affini will surprisingly not be present but the Italians don't come without a plan as after skipping the worlds, Filippo Ganna will be keen on conquering the European Championships and has Lorenzo Milesi as a back up. João Almeida will be a strong climber-focused option, whilst the likes of Stefan Küng, Stefan Bissegger, Mads Pedersen, Mathias Vacek, Daan Hoole, Ethan Hayter and most importantly the British powerhouse Joshua Tarling will be aiming to win this race against the world's best.
