Cees Bol had his first day teaming up with Mark Cavendish today, a positive experience at the
UAE Tour - however one that did not end with a win.
“It was a difficult start because of the crosswind. When Mark was not with us in the opening phase, I stayed in the wheel to save myself," Bol describes in a post-race interview. "I knew that the second group could still return and it eventually did. We found each other again and the moment we drove forward, the group broke up again.”
Bol always found himself in the front echelons, but in the final kilometers he had Mark Cavendish with him. Without over a dozen sprinters and any big leadout present, chances were better for the Astana Qazaqstan duo. “In the final we were able to discuss briefly and make a plan," he said.
However despite this Bol couldn't assist the Manxman meaningfully in the final kilometers, eventually riding to 10th as Cavendish finished third. "Some details could be better, but overall it went well. We are achieving a good result here”, the Dutchman concluded.
