Alpecin-Deceuninck lost Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen but have managed to take another win at this year's Tour de France with their third team leader. Kaden Groves won stage 20 of the Grand Boucle but didn't even use his sprinting abilities; the Australian won the stage with an impressive solo attack.
The 184-kilometer long stage was always going to be a day for the breakaway, and with some hilly terrain early in the day there were dozens of riders trying to get in front. Ben Healy was amongst them, but was covered by Kévin Vauquelin and Tobias Johannessen who looked to keep their GC position. Ultimately Jordan Jegat managed to get in the front group and would use this to get in the Top10, overtaking Ben O'Connor in what can be considered the final competitive stage.
The third week and the heavy rain that fell early on made it a very difficult start for the fatigued legs of the peloton, but eventually a strong group managed to form itself:
Romain Grégoire, Matteo Jorgenson, Jordan Jegat, Simone Velasco, Iván Romeo, Tim Wellens, Kaden Groves, Frank van den Broek, Harry Sweeny, Ewen Costiou, Matteo Trentin, Jake Stewart and Pascal Eenkhoorn formed the front group that would go on to fight for the stage win. Lots of riders missed out and on the Côte de Thésy Wout van Aert attacked in the peloton, chasing down Axel Laurance and forming a second chasing group that wasn't too far away from the front due to the work of Jayco AlUla who looked to keep Ben O'Connors 10th place. Both would come in unsuccessful.
In front Jegat wanted to keep the pace high and attacked with Harry Sweeny - the EF rider later took on the head of the race by himself for large kilometers, but the headwind killed his chances of succeeding. With 26 kilometers to go he was caught and a few riders would get dropped in the process. The late climbs began to do some damage, with the likes of Grégoire and Romeo crashing, Kaden Groves found himself in front with Jake Stewart and Frank van den Broek. With 17 kilometers to go Groves attacked and went solo, marking the winning move.
The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider rode to a stupendous solo stage win on a day where the sprinters didn't seem to have a chance. Frank van den Broek rode to second on the day with Pascal Eenkhoorn finishing third.
