Now aged 34, Elia Viviani is aware he doesn't have too long left competing at the very top level. The biggest goal remaining for the Italian is to claim a second Olympic gold medal.
Back at the Rio Olympics, Viviani triumphed in the Omnium and ahead of an expected return to the Olympic Games in 2024 in Paris, the INEOS Grenadiers rider wants that second track gold. "Among the dreams that remain for me to accomplish," he admits to Gazzetta dello Sport. "I choose as a priority that of winning again at the Olympic Games."
At the most recent Olympics in Tokyo three years ago, Viviani took home a bronze medal. No matter what happens in Paris next summer however, the 34-year-old is planning to bring his career to an end just yet.
"Even if I won gold at the next Olympic Games, I would not end my career," he explains. "I would like to treat myself to at least two more seasons, but only on the road."
