Stage 1 of the Vuelta a Burgos provided the opportunity for plenty riders to surprise in what was a very explosive finale on the Alto del Castillo. Team Visma | Lease a Bike ruled over the finale, finishing first and second whilst Matthew Brennan has won the opening day of the race.
The first stage of the race featured a familiar finale, with a mostly flat day and then an explosive finale in Burgos, on the Alto del Castillo. With 900 meters at almost 7%, it was a finale that provide an opportunity for sprinters, puncheurs and climbers alike to the first win of the race.
Javier Ibañez, Josh Burnett, Valentin Ferron and Unai Aznar marked the day's breakaway. Visma and Lidl-Trek did a lot of the work behind controlling the front quartet; a task that then became difficult to
The catch was only made right outside the final kilometer, with the teams racing at full speed to position for the final climb. A rider from Kern Pharma sprinted right out of the first corner getting a gap over the peloton in which hesitation ruled at first.
Visma looked to set up with Ben Tulett pulling for Matthew Brennan; whilst Dylan Teuns sprinted early on. However the technical finale suited the Dutch team and its two men, with Brennan launching his sprint in the final straight after the catch was made, and moving on to take the stage win. Ben Tulett still had the legs to finish second on the day, completing a perfect finale for Visma whilst gaining time on his GC rivals.
