Stage 2 of the
UAE Tour has created bigger differences than expected. The 12-kilometer time trial through the desert in Al Hudayriyat proved to be more difficult than expected and the overall classification has suffered meaningful changes; with
Remco Evenepoel taking the stage win and overall lead.
The Belgian put in a very early time before the race's live broadcast even began and took the hot seat when he finished his effort. His main rivals for the stage win were Ethan Hayter (fourth at 25 seconds) and
Joshua Tarling. The latter was the rider who got the closest to the Olympic, World and European champion, however he was 6 seconds slower in the 13-minute effort.
Evenepoel averaged over 56Km/h to take the stage win ahead of Tarling and Rémi Cavagna. Luke Plapp, 26 seconds behind, was the only other GC rider finishing in the Top10, whilst behind a few other riders also lost meaningful time.
Isaac del Toro has lost 42 seconds at the line and will begin the next stage with 32 seconds of disadvantage over the Belgian.
However, we can expect the GC to be turned on its head once again tomorrow as stage 3 takes the peloton into Jebel Mobrah, the race's first and new summit finish, in which the final 6 kilometers average 12% and the gaps are expected to be much bigger than what we've had this Tuesday.
