Stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse Women was a day for the sprinters, with a strong breakaway that threatened to change the overall classification. In the end, it was Briton Zoe Bäckstedt who took the stage win with a sprint that decimated her rivals.
Starting and finishing in Bad Ragaz, the third day of racing was the first opportunity for the sprinters, with no climbs throughout the day which could put the fast women under difficulty.
However the breakaway would feature some big riders, including GC contender Kim Le Court. Alice Towers, Juliette Berthet, Loes Adegeest, Ruby Roseman-Gannon, Megan Arens, Femke Markus and Katharina Sadnik formed the day's front group, a dangerous one which even put Le Court in the provisional race lead.
But the peloton could not let it get away and flew through the 120-kilometer day, catching up with the breakaway figures. Laura Asencio also went on the attack towards the finale but a bunch sprint was inevitable. In the final kilometers there was also a large crash involving Laurens Dickson.
In the final sprint then there was a rider who was above the rest: Zoe Bäckstedt. The British rider put on a stellar sprint that saw her distance the rest of the field. Lily Williams and Shari Bossuyt rode to second and third on the day.
