Stage 2 of the
Tour de Suisse Women has been another important day for the overall classification contenders, with the final two climbs creating quite a lot of damage.
Elisa Longo Borghini took a strong solo win, alongside the yellow jersey after a successful late attack.
The race was marked by the breakaway of Carlotta Cipressi and Margot Vanpachtenbeke, and the early crash of race leader Femke de Vries. Most of the stage was flat, but two short ascents towards the end created the opportunity for gaps to be created.
When the first of which began, Marlen Reusser and Katazyna Niewiadoma attacked the race, splitting up the group to where only the best climbers had a shot at victory. In the final steeper ascent, with around 1.5 kilometers in length, the attacks were more powerful.
On the first ascent Niewiadoma was followed by Longo Borghini and De Vries, but on the final one Longo Borghini went solo off the front whilst De Vries cracked completely.
With 3 kilometers to go any hopes of closing down on Longo Borghini ended as Reusser and Niewiadoma rode off route. Van Dam noticed the error and from behind, remained on route and rode to second place on the day isolated. Longo Borghini took the stage win however and rode into the race's yellow jersey in Locarno.
Urska Zigart suffered a heavy crash at the flamme rouge, and has unfortunately been taken to hospital. Reports suggest she is conscious but no further information regarding the injuries has been confirmed. The news is worrying for Tadej Pogacar, who has now started stage 2 of the men's Tour de Suisse.
