Results Tour de Pologne 2026 stage 4 - Bart Lemmen overcomes mass crash to take first pro win for Visma

Stage 4 of the Tour de Pologne has been won by Bart Lemmen, the leader of Team Visma | Lease a Bike who crashed during the stage-marking fall late in the day; but overcame it to then take a strong victory on the first hilly day of the race.
The breakaway of the day was made up of Dries de Bondt, Matteo Malucelli, Patryk Stosz and Tobiasz Pawlak. The riders did not have many chances of succeeding in a finale that was suited to the climbers, however their chances improved as chaos struck the race.
With 42 kilometers to go, the race was neutralized following a mass crash. Pologne has seen over the year many serious falls and for several minutes, a similar scenario was brought upon the riders. Around two dozen fell including most of UAE Team Emirates - XRG.
João Almeida, injured, was dropped soon after the flag dropped for a second time, struggling with the technical urban sections and the wet roads that were felt. There were reports of a change in course, but ultimately the decision was to maintain the hilltop finish in Karpacz. A 7-kilometer long climb at 6% beforehand could however deal some damage.
Visma attack the race
Whilst most classics riders did not want it, the climbers present needed to make the difference in this terrain. After the breakaway was caught, Tijmen Graat of Visma made the first big move with just over 8 kilometers to go. Marco Brenner attacked next, followed by Graat's teammate Bart Lemmen.
Christian Scaroni also bridged across, however Visma looked to have the upper hand and Lemmen's rhythm on the climb was superior to that of his rivals. With just under 5 kilometers to go the Dutchman put in a big move and dropped his competitors; whilst the peloton was far behind and losing ground.
Lemmen set off on the final descent only with a few seconds of advantage over Scaroni and Brenner, whilst the final ascent had only just over 1 kilometer in distance. It was a thrilling finale with Scaroni slowly reeling back the gap. In the steep final 100 meters it looked like the Italian was going to be able to overtake Lemmen, but the road was not long enough.

- I agree, Remco did have bigger power output in the lower and punchier mountains, but when they would have got into the high mountains, then the picture would be turned around. I still think Jonas is a better high mountain climber and would have beaten Remco on Alp d'Huez. Maybe we will never know, I have the feeling Jonas will retire. He has nothing more to prove: He won all three GT, TdF twice... he won all the major one week stage races... he can't seem to win one day races... he crashed out on a few occasions and hurt himself pretty badly... him staying and beating other cyclists that are not Pogačar is BS... he knows he will never again beat Pogi, regardless what he says... - Look, Pogi is my compatriot and I know a little more about him then ordinary commentators. I have inside information. Pogi's estimated VO2 max is around 90 to 96 mL/kg/min, some are saying amost up to 100, which places him among the highest ever suggested for an endurance athlete. However, it's not the single reason he dominates. His true advantage comes from a combination of: 1. An exceptionally high VO2 max. 2. The ability to ride at an unusually high percentage of it for long periods. 3. Outstanding cycling efficiency. 4. Rapid recovery. 5. Exceptional race intelligence.
