Stage 3 of the Vuelta a Burgos was a day that promised big differences in the overall classification and it delivered. Felix Gall took the stage win and race lead after a dominant climbing performance, topping Oscar Onley who will now be in pursuit of the lead.
The queen stage of the race featured a rolling profile and then a final ascent of 7 kilometers at 9% average gradient. Whilst not the only mountain stage, with the Lagunas de Neila summit finish closing off the race, this day was expected to be crucial for the outcome of the race.
The breakaway of the day consisted of Jordan Labrosse, Gorka Corres, Mathieu Burgaudeau, Valentin Retailleau, Jamie Meehan and Diego Uriarte. Pavel Sivakov later on joined the front group as UAE began trying to surprise the competition with their depth.
The gap gradually continued to come down and down, until with 11 kilometers to go the last survivors of the front group were caught by the peloton. The final climb was beginning, with Lidl-Trek putting themselves in front, pushing the pace with Julien Bernard and Sam Oomen who set up for an attack of Giulio Ciccone.

GC battle implodes

Ciccone attacked with 7.9 kilometers to go, and Pablo Torres then attacked over the top. Decathlon began pushing the pace behind, and Felix Gall launched an acceleration with 6.8 kilometers to go. Onley Torres, Oscar Onley, Giulio Ciccone and Enric Mas could follow, with the quintet pulling clear of the rest of the GC field.
Gall and Onley continued to attack each other but with 4.7 kilometers to go the Austrian managed to pull clear of the competition. Onley then set off in pursuit but the kilometers of the climbing began to feel heavy in the legs of several riders and the gaps began to grow.
Giulio Pellizzari came from behind catching a few riders and after the summit of the climb, the final downhill kilometers favoured the chasers. Nevertheless, Gall's advantage was enough to take what was only his second professional win, following that of the 2023 Tour de France.
Giulio Ciccone sprinted to second place followed by Pellizzari and Oscar Onley, whilst Gall moved into the race lead.
