Stage 14 of the Tour de France has been won by Tadej Pogacar. The Tour's return to the mountains saw the GC men go head to head on the Vosges, and in the Col du Haag it was Tadej Pogacar who made the difference and took a solo win to extend his lead over Jonas Vingegaard and the rest of the field.
The start of the day featured an intermediate sprint, won by Jasper Philipsen ahead of Mads Pedersen and Max Kanter - with Tim Merlier skipping the fight, in what may be understood as his withdrawal from the fight for the green jersey. Shortly after, the 21-kilometer long Grand Ballon provided an opportunity for the climbers to go up the road and try their luck, and that quickly happened.
With UAE not looking to directly respond to attacks, a few dozen riders managed to go up the road, although they did not gain much of a margin over the peloton. Towards the summit Richard Carapaz and Valentin Paret-Peintre (the latter make a big move in the KOM classification today) moved clear of the group and were joined afterwards by Ben Healy and Uno-X duo of Tobias and Anders Johannessen.
Einer Rubio joined them on the following climb, unlike Thymen Arensman who punctured during the climb. This group had just over three minutes over the peloton at best, constantly led by UAE's men whilst the Tom Pidcock group - who was in the breakaway.
The groups would slowly get caught by the peloton until only the Carapaz group up front resisted the pace of the peloton. In some of the descents, the technical features would cause splits, but these were ultimately cancelled.

Tadej Pogacar makes the difference on Col du Haag

On the final climb to the Col du Haag, Decathlon quickly took up the front of the group with Tiesj Benoot and Nicolas Prodhomme setting a very hard pace that thinned the group down to around 15 riders. Sepp Kuss then took over the pace as UAE lacked the legs to keep the pace as they liked - Brandon McNulty and Adam Yates had been dropped.
Florian Lipowitz attacked with 11 kilometers to go, followed by Paul Seixas whilst Pogacar opted not to follow. Sepp Kuss closed the attack and Vingegaard then took over the GC group. The Dane set a hard pace whilst the likes of Mattias Skjelmose, Lenny Martínez and then Remco Evenepoel were dropped on the climb. Carapaz and Johannessen had been caught in the meantime.
With 1.6 kilometers to the summit of the climb Pogacar hit the front with an explosive attack through the crowd. The final section of the climb proved quite difficult for all riders with clear pain faces on. Vingegaard and Paul Seixas crossed the top of the climb just over 20 seconds behind with Isaac del Toro closing down on them; whilst Lipowitz, Evenepoel and Ayuso were around 45 behind.
Pogacar took the win in Le Markstein for the second time after 2023, gaining 38 seconds on Isaac del Toro who was second over the line, followed by Paul Seixas. Jonas Vingegaard arrived a few seconds behind, whilst Remco Evenepoel's group was also only a mere few seconds in the rear.
