Stage 13 of the 2026 Tour de France has been won by Mauro Schmid. Team Jayco AlUla had been chasing victories through breakaways, and with their best weapons all deployed this Friday afternoon, the Australian team won in Belfort.
The stage was unanimously seen as a day for a breakaway to succeed and so the speed in the peloton was very high right from the start of the stage in Dole. The Tour's longest stage had 205 kilometers in length but was pan-flat in almost its entirety, meaning it would be difficult to form a breakaway.
Through a large split, around 40 riders found themselves in the head of the race within the first hour of the race. This group was then followed by another large group including Mads Pedersen and Biniam Girmay, after Lidl-Trek's chase failed to succeed.
The sprinter duo joined the breakaway that included Jasper Philipsen, with the trio going head-to-head in the intermediate sprint where the Belgian was the strongest. The group included several teams that had multiple riders, although they weren't put to use in tactical terms. Pinarello - Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team took up most of the responsibility in the small peloton as Tom Pidcock was in front. He and last year's Top10 surprise Jordan Jegat had a lot to gain GC-wise, and the two ProTeams united in extending the gap.
The gaps grew to around 8 minutes, before Bahrain - Victorious and Lidl-Trek began working in the peloton and controlling Pidcock's time gain, as UAE had no interest in doing so and had men up front.

Tom Pidcock takes control

In the climb to the Ballon d'Alsace the main splits were created, although they were not definitive. Tom Pidcock and Jayco AlUla, for Michael Matthews, tried controlling the pace. Over the summit Pidcock was first, but the attacks wouldn't split the group down to a minimal group. Jayco had Mauro Schmid and Harold Tejada, UAE's Brandon McNulty was joined by Tim Wellens on the descent; and the five riders were joined by Harold Tejada, Kévin Vauquelin Maxim van Gils, Jordan Jegat and Clément Braz Afonso.
With no-one working out front and Pidcock having no help, attacks were then frequent and the numbers game would prove to be key. Jayco had two men, and with 16 kilometers to go Mauro Schmid attacked with Harold Tejada following him. UAE lacked a man up front and so the group behind had some cohesion - although mostly it were attacks that continued keeping the duo in sight.
But they wouldn't be caught. Mauro Schmid led the sprint from the two riders in front and Jayco, who had four men in the day's breakaway, took their first stage win of the race. He beat Tejada to the line whilst Tom Pidcock sprinted to third place. Pidcock moved into the top spots of the overall classification, whilst Jegat also gained traction in the fight for the Tour's Top10 once again.
