Olav Kooij during the 2026 Tour de France
The 2026 Sparkassen Münsterland Giro provided the sprinters to take a victory towards the end of the season. Tim Merlier, Jasper Philipsen, Matthew Brennan, Dylan Groenewegen and more top sprinters were present. But none were even close to victory, which was taken by Olav Kooij.
The 190-kilometer long race was pan-flat and featured racing from Borken to Münster. A race for the sprinters, and a grand majority of the world's best took to the start - a sprinter list that could challenge that of the Tour de France. This afternoon, the Giro dell'Emilia would see the climbers and classics specialists take to the road in Italy.
Samuele Zoccarato, Samuel Leroux, Ward Vanhoof, Kelland O'Brien and Arno Wallenborn formed the day's breakaway. The quintet kept the pace up all the way into the final kilometers, putting the peloton under pressure to close down the gap.
The catch was made with a mere 5 kilometers to go. All teams looked to be at the front, looking to save their legs but stay in position ahead of the predicted bunch sprint. A narrow cobbled section with 3 kilometers saw Decathlon take the front, and Olav Kooij let the wheel go so that time trialist Daan Hoole would go off the front. The catch was then made with 1.7 kilometers to go.
Mads Pedersen arrived to the front inside the final kilometer leading out Max Walscheid who was in the final race of his career. Decathlon led the sprint out but it was Walscheid the first to launch it. But from his wheel, Olav Kooij sprinted from behind and brought the victory for Decathlon CMA CGM Team. Jordi Meeus and Frits Biesterbos completed the podium; whilst the likes of Merlier and Philipsen were nowhere near the front. The returning Fabio Jakobsen finished 15th on the day.
