To no-one's surprise, the four-time consecutive winner at Il Lombardia has done it again. Tadej Pogacar rode to his fifth victory in a row at the Italian monument, once again dropping the competition and beating a solo Remco Evenepoel as has happened both at the World and European Championships over the past two weeks.
It was a race where everyone knew they had to try to be in the breakaway to try and surprise and have a shot at victory, but not many did so. The front group did consist of a few riders, but for no apparent reason Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe helped UAE pace behind, making the job easier for the defending champion's team.
Quinn Simmons, Michael Matthews, Filippo Ganna, Victor Langellotti, Lucas Hamilton, Gal Glivar, Mattia Bais, Pello Bilbao, Louis Vervaeke, Bart Lemmen, Walter Calzoni, Bjorn Koerdt, Thibault Guernalec and Asbjorn Hellemose formed the front group. Throughout the many climbs of the day and a high pace, slowly riders began losing contact with the group, and on the Passo della Crocetta Quinn Simmons attacked off the front of the group, gaining distance on a chasing group of Michael Matthews, Filippo Ganna and only a few more riders. In the peloton the likes of Tom Pidcock and Jai Hindley had minor crashes which affected their race, even if not dramatically.
In the peloton no-one pushed the pace on those ascents, leaving UAE in a comfortable position into the Passo di Ganda. Simmons entered it still with 2:30 minutes in the head of the race and with great legs, but this in no way affected the team's tactics who had Rafal Majka and Jay Vine set an excruciatingly high pace in the first kilometers of the climb, before Pogacar launched his attack with 37 kilometers to go.

Nothing that could be done

No-one even tried responding to the Slovenian's attack, with Remco Evenepoel leading the chase group without a single stint behind him. Paul Seixas was dropped and near the summit so was Del Toro, as his caught up with Simmons whilst having Michael Storer in the wheel. The race for victory was over as the gap was above a minute for the World Champion up front.
Evenepoel rode away from Storer in the descent whilst Simmons struggled quite a lot with the high pace and was later reeled in by Del Toro with the two working together. Everyone else was significantly behind. Pogacar took the win with comfort, second was Evenepoel even though he was blocked and stopped on the final climb whilst Storer rode to a breakthrough monument podium.
