After losing out on victory in the very final meters of the Nokere Koerse, Alec Segaert set off for the GP de Denain with intentions of attacking. The Bahrain - Victorious rider was the winner, although he was almost caught in the finale exactly the same way he was the day before.
The breakaway of the day consisted of Ashlin Barry, Aaron Gate, Alessio Delle Vedove, Gorka Sorarrain, Cole Kessler, Nolan Huysmans, Antoine Betger, Morné van Nieker and Killan Théot. The race consisted of many flat cobbled sectors, where punctures took out pre-race favourites Arnaud de Lie.
With 48 kilometers to go Per Strand Hagenes of Visma attacked and was followed by Alec Segaert, building a duo consisting of perhaps the two strongest in the race. They would work together, maintaining their gap over the sizeable peloton; who then in itself began splitting into groups throughout the cobbled sectors. Riders like Brent van Moer, Nils Politt and Tibor del Grosso were all active behind but it was not possible to close down the gap on flat roads against two powerhouse riders.
In the final cobbled sector Hagenes attacked, dropping Segaert however the Belgian remained behind only a few seconds. In an unusual tactic, Segaert chose not to close the gap, staying a few seconds in arears, before making the catch with 2.5 kilometers to go and attacking straight over the top.
Behind however there was a peloton, as Visma worked hard to make the catch to the chasing group. The peloton had motion and came very close to making the catch, however today's finale was flat and here the Belgian rider was able to maintain his lead and take an emotional solo win in Denain.
