Primoz Roglic has won the elite men's time trial at the 2026 European Championships, taking the first European title of his career on home roads in Slovenia.
The 36-year-old completed the 21.8-kilometre course in 28:16.061, beating Bruno Armirail by 7.13 seconds after taking control of the race from the opening checkpoint. Maxime Decomble completed the podium at 29 seconds, narrowly holding off Ilan Van Wilder, while Stefan Küng finished fifth.
For Roglic, the victory delivered the major home success Slovenia had been chasing throughout the championships, only days after he finished 10th in the elite men's road race.

Roglic blows the race open early

Roglic established the decisive advantage almost immediately. At the first checkpoint after eight kilometres, he was already 12.91 seconds faster than Armirail, with Van Wilder 15.80 seconds down and Decomble at 16.53. Until then, the leading riders had been separated by only a handful of seconds.
Van Wilder had initially set the fastest time through the opening section before Armirail moved ahead, while Decomble also remained firmly in contention after a strong start.
Roglic changed the picture completely. His 13:10.29 split gave him clear daylight over the rest, although Armirail began to recover through the middle section. By 16.3 kilometres, Roglic's advantage had been cut to around nine seconds, keeping the title fight alive heading into the final kilometres.

Armirail fights back but Roglic holds on

Armirail had already produced the strongest finishing time before Roglic arrived, stopping the clock in 28:23.190 and taking almost 22 seconds out of Decomble.
That left the Frenchman waiting in the hot seat as Roglic approached the finish with his advantage reduced to single figures.
The Slovenian still had enough. He crossed the line in 28:16.061 to secure gold by 7.13 seconds, with Armirail taking silver and Decomble bronze at 29 seconds.
Van Wilder finished just outside the medals in fourth, four seconds behind Decomble, while Küng had to settle for fifth at 35.81 seconds.
Kasper Asgreen finished sixth, with Marco Frigo seventh and Jakob Söderqvist eighth. Britain's Callum Thornley took ninth, one place ahead of Iván Romeo.
The expected late challenge from Küng, Söderqvist and Asgreen never materialised strongly enough to trouble Roglic, leaving Armirail as the only rider to keep the final deficit inside ten seconds.
For Roglic, the result adds another major championship title to a career that already includes Olympic time trial gold. This one came in front of a home Slovenian crowd, on a course where he had been the fastest man from the first meaningful split to the finish.
