Remco Evenepoel has been absolutely electric since making a winning return to racing recently at Brabantse Pijl. Following a podium at the Amstel Gold Race, the Soudal - Quick-Step leader now has eyes firmly focused La Fleche Wallonne, although he admits the race isn't best suited to him.
In his one and only previous appearance at La Fleche Wallonne back in 2022, Evenepoel finished 43rd back in 2022. It's likely the Olympic champion will be much closer to the fight for victory this time around, but can the Belgian add another big win to his palmares? “It’s going to be tough to get away solo on this course,” Evenepoel says of his potential race strategy in his pre-race interview. “The wind always plays a role here, and there’s a chance of rain later on, which would only make the race even harder.”
And for Evenepoel, the harder the race the better the chance of victory. “We’ll do everything we can to wear down the really explosive guys as much as possible and see what’s possible from there. The Mur de Huy doesn’t suit me quite as well as those lighter, punchy riders - like Thibau Nys, for example - so we’ll have to push the pace early," he explains. "But I don’t think we’ll be the only ones with that strategy. I’m sure UAE will try something similar.”
“If it does come down to a sprint, I’ll try to make the best of it," concludes the Belgian's preview. "Positioning will be crucial, and then I just have to believe in my own chances.”
