The decision had been made several weeks ago, however today Remco Evenepoel has publicly confirmed that he will be starting his season and debuting his new rainbow jersey at the Vuelta a San Juan this January.
The Belgian had a storming 2022 season, achieving several high wins and being named male cyclist of the year - receiving the Velo d'Or award. 2023 will be hard to match, however he sets off with the goal of performing at the Giro d'Italia. On the way, he will be racing several stage-races, and the first of which will be the returning Argentinian race.
“I am happy to be racing in San Juan again. This was my first race as a professional and I have many good memories of my previous participations," Evenepoel said in a video shared by Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team. "I hope for a lot of fans along the side of the road and can't wait to show my Soudal Quick-Step rainbow jersey.”
Evenepoel won't be the only one setting foot in South America this coming month however, as many other headliners are looking for the good weather and safer conditions. Egan Bernal, Filippo Ganna, Peter Sagan, Sam Bennett and Fernando Gaviria are all amongst the expected starters in a field that will also include Continental teams and local national teams.
